Lumos Launches $2.5M Project to Support 30,000 Displaced Children in Ukraine
25.06.2025
Lumos is proud to announce a transformative new project in Ukraine, funded by a $2.5 million grant from the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund (UHF).
This initiative will double the number of regions Lumos serves in Ukraine, extending vital humanitarian assistance to nearly 30,000 displaced children at risk of family separation in Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhzhia.
In these areas, where conflict has brought fear and uncertainty, this project will provide critical educational, psychological and case-specific assistance for children whose childhoods have been disrupted by war.
Through this initiative, Lumos will:
- Establish nine temporary educational spaces, creating safe havens where children can access education and psychological support.
- Provide 1,320 children with special educational needs and disabilities with inclusive educational kits, ensuring every child’s right to learning is upheld.
- Equip teachers with educational tools, including laptops, so they have the resources required to support their students.
- Implement personalised case management, delivering tailored assistance to each child and family.
- Offer cash payments to families to alleviate financial burdens induced by the conflict.
- Provide multi-level psychological support to address the invisible wounds of war.
- Deploy five mobile teams to reach remote and heavily affected communities, ensuring distance is not a barrier to critical aid.
A Commitment to Children in Crisis
This project is being implemented in regions close to active combat zones, where the need for support is most urgent. By focusing on education, psychological well-being, and family stability, Lumos aims to protect and nurture the potential of Ukrainian children as they face unimaginable challenges.
With support by the UHF, Lumos is committed to the well-being of children in Ukraine through urgent aid, with the long-term vision of a safe and secure Ukraine where families can rebuild their lives and thrive.
About Lumos
Lumos works to realise every child’s right to a family by transforming care systems around the world. Our vision is a world in which all children grow up in safe and loving families within supported communities.
Founded in 2005 by author J.K. Rowling, Lumos partners with governments, civil society and young people with lived experience to transform care systems globally and advocate for family-based solutions that help children thrive. We ensure that families receive the support they need to stay together or reunite, and that children grow up in family-based settings such as foster or kinship care, not institutions. Despite clear evidence of the harms of institutionalisation, an estimated 5.4 million children worldwide continue to live in institutions. And a much larger number of children are at risk of institutionalisation – those living in poverty, experiencing domestic violence and abuse, and living in countries affected by conflict.
