Our impact
In our 20-year history, Lumos has worked with partners across the globe to enable more than 280,000 children and young people to flourish in family environments rather than institutions.
Since 2009 , Lumos has…
Developed
A flexible, proven approach we share with governments and partners around the world to reform care systems so every child can grow up in a family.
Enabled
Hundreds of thousands of children to stay with or return to loving families or find safe alternative family care when that wasn’t possible. This has helped them avoid the harms of institutionalisation and grow up with the love and protection every child deserves.
Trained
Social workers, medical professionals, teachers, carers, civil servants and policymakers from over 60 countries so that children’s rights and high-quality family care are at the heart of their work.
Championed
The expertise of children and young people with lived experience of care systems, informing them on their rights and supporting them to take part in conversations that affect them—from decisions about their own care, to discussions with the United Nations.
Influenced
Our advocacy helped change regulations governing European Structural and Investment Funds, preventing them from being spent on institutions and directing them instead towards reforming care systems.
This meant that investments from a €2.7 billion funding pot could no longer support institutions and had to support care reform.

Our impact in Ukraine
We have worked in Ukraine since 2013. When the war in Ukraine began in 2022, our work didn’t stop. In fact, we only invested more in our emergency programmes in the country to support families, and continue our long-term projects to see permanent care reform.
