Michelle Lee-Izu


Michelle is passionate about the work of Lumos. She has worked throughout her career to meet the needs of the most vulnerable and marginalised children. Michelle has also sought alternatives to residential care and worked to unite and support children and young people to remain within a caring family environment. Michelle is particularly impassioned due to her own personal family experience of disability and institutional care.

Michelle has recently become Barnardo’s Corporate Director for Children’s Services – England (interim). Michelle has over 27 years of experience of operational management and strategic leadership of staff and volunteers (both within the statutory and voluntary sector) and corporate leadership within the third sector. As an experienced leader in Children’s Services, Policy & Project management Michelle is regularly consulted by local and central Government departments on Safeguarding and risk management in the children’s social care sector. Michelle is the Senior Responsible Officer for a number of Barnardo’s National Projects (including the Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse and the National FGM Centre and the pilot of the Independent Child Trafficking Advocacy). Michelle has an expertise of working within a multi-agency environment, both internationally and nationally, with local government departments to effect change through lobbying and influencing, learning and best practice models. Michelle also ran her own management training and consultancy business for over 6 years.
