Lumos Kenya Celebrated as ‘Champion of Care Reform’ at International Day of Families Event

20.05.2026

A senior Kenyan government official has praised Lumos as “the champion of care reform, helping to restore hope and transform lives”, a powerful recognition of the organisation’s growing impact on children and families across Kenya.

The tribute came during a national celebration of International Day of Families held in Embu County earlier this month, where Lumos Kenya joined government officials, community leaders and church partners to mark real progress in transforming how Kenya cares for children.

During her speech at the event CPA. Carren Ageng’o, Principal Secretary (pictured), State Department for Children’s Services, commended Lumos for being ‘the champion of care reform, helping to restore hope and transform lives’.

The event brought together the Lumos Kenya team, representatives from the ACK Diocese of Mbeere, a key partner in Lumos’s Positive Parenting Programme, and officials from both national and county government. Together, they celebrated Kenya’s ongoing care reform journey and encouraged more parents to join the National Positive Parenting Programme.

Launched in 2025, the National Positive Parenting Programme is a landmark Lumos initiative developed in partnership with the Kenyan Government. It equips parents and caregivers with practical tools to raise children free from violence, in nurturing and supportive family environments. “One of the pillars of care reform is family strengthening and prevention of separation,” said Alice Kimotho, Programme Director at Lumos Kenya.

The national government, the county government and partners all came together so that we could mark what has been achieved so far to ensure that children grow up in safe and loving families. It was a day of real celebration, but also a chance to recognise the potential to make an even greater difference to the lives of more children through further care reform.

“Family is the foundation of every child’s growth, protection, and development. Strong families create a sense of belonging, love, security, and identity. They help children grow with confidence, hope, and dignity.” – Rosemary (pictured), Deputy Chairperson of the Lumos Youth Advisory Board.

One of the most powerful moments of the day came from Rosemary, Deputy Chairperson of the Lumos Youth Advisory Board, who spoke movingly about the meaning of family.

Family is not only about people related by blood, marriage, or adoption, it includes the people who genuinely care for us, support us, guide us, and stand with us during both difficult and joyful moments in life.

– Rosemary, Deputy Chairperson of the Lumos Youth Advisory Board.

Speaking on behalf of the Youth Advisory Board, Rosemary urged every attendee to make child protection a personal responsibility, a call that resonated throughout the room.

The Lumos Kenya Youth Advisory Board is a participatory group of young people, many with lived experience of care systems, who are committed to driving positive change for children and families. Supported by Lumos and the Directorate of Children Services, the Board ensures that the voices of young people are central to care reform in Kenya.

The enthusiasm for Lumos’s work carried beyond officials and partners. Peter Ngoci, a Child Protection Volunteer from Embu County, summed up the community’s hopes simply and powerfully, “If we embrace this programme, we will have our families back on track.”

Stand with young people like Rosemary and support Lumos in giving every child the chance to grow up in a family.
